Pack Smart, Room by Room
Good packing is what makes moving day fast, and a fast day is a cheaper day on an hourly crew. This guide walks through what you need, how to handle each room, and a timeline so you’re not taping boxes at midnight. It works for a Vista house, a San Marcos townhome, or an Encinitas beach condo.
Gather Your Materials First
Buying supplies in one trip beats five runs to the store. For an average North County two-bedroom, plan on:

Kitchen
The kitchen takes the longest, so start here. Wrap plates vertically like records, not stacked flat. Glasses go in cell dividers. Pad pots with dish towels to save paper.
- Leave a few essentials out for the last night and the first morning.
- Tape spice and oil lids, then bag them so a leak doesn’t ruin a box.
- Use small boxes for canned goods so they stay liftable.
Bedrooms
Bedrooms pack fast. Use wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes, and keep dresser drawers loaded with soft items, just shrink-wrap or tape them shut. Vacuum-bag off-season clothing to shrink the load. Roll belts and bag jewelry in a small pouch you carry yourself, not on the truck. Strip the beds last and stuff the linens into large boxes or use them as padding around lamps and mirrors, which saves you a bundle of paper and a box or two.
Kids’ rooms are their own project. Pack a small bag of favorite toys and a familiar blanket that rides with the family, not the load. A move into a new Carlsbad or San Marcos school district is already a lot for a kid; having their stuff buried in box 38 of 50 on night one makes it worse.
Bathrooms
Bathrooms look small and pack slow, mostly because of liquids. Seal every cap, bag shampoos and lotions, and toss anything expired rather than hauling it. Wrap the medicine cabinet contents in a labeled gallon bag so you can find the basics fast. Towels do double duty as padding for the bathroom mirror or a framed print.
Fragiles and Electronics
Photograph the back of your TV and stereo before unplugging so reassembly is obvious. Original boxes are ideal; if they’re gone, double-box with padding on all six sides.

Garage and Outdoor Gear
The garage is the trap that runs moving day long. Tackle it early.
- Drain gas and oil from mowers and trimmers; crews can’t transport fuel.
- Keep hardware in labeled zip bags taped to the furniture it belongs to.
- Bundle long tools and bag bikes or wrap the chains so grease stays put.
- Bins of holiday decor and beach gear can go as-is if they seal shut.
Labeling System That Actually Works
- Label by destination room, not just contents: “Master Bedroom–closet.”
- Number your boxes and keep a quick list, so you know if box 14 of 40 went missing.
- Mark the “open first” box clearly. It holds toiletries, chargers, a few dishes, and a tool for assembly.
- Color-code with a marker stripe per room if you’ve got a big house. The crew unloads to the right room without asking.

Can the movers take my propane tank or mower gas?
No. Crews can’t transport fuel, propane, or other hazardous materials. Drain equipment and dispose of or transport these yourself.
What goes in the “open first” box?
Toiletries, phone chargers, a few plates and utensils, basic tools, paper towels, and anything you’ll need the first night before you unpack.
Should I empty my dresser drawers?
For soft items like clothes, you can leave drawers loaded and wrap the dresser. Empty anything heavy or breakable so the piece stays light enough to carry safely.
